The Artist’s Legacy
Organised by Spain’s Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC), the Art Law Association of Spain (ADA), the Foundation of Professor Uria and the Lazaro Galdiano Museum.
Date and place: 28th November 2016, 9.00am to 19.45pm, in the Auditorium of the Lazaro Galdiano Museum, 122 Calle Serrano, Madrid 28006.
This conference is a one-day event of roundtable discussions and individual contributions from experts in the field of Artists’ Legacies. The idea for the event stemmed from the organisers’ common interest in raising awareness of the importance and necessity of providing artists with appropriate protection concerning their legacy and to facilitate the dissemination of culture among the general public and art market professionals.
The four organisers of the event, Spain’s Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC), the Art Law Association of Spain (ADA), the Foundation of Professor Uria and the Lazaro Galdiano Museum, share the objectives of defending the right to create, the care and support of artists and the preservation of contemporary cultural heritage.
There are numerous factors which artists need to consider during their lifetime concerning the preservation of their artistic legacy. The event aims to raise awareness of these issues and help artists and their executors to organise their estates professionally so that their legacy can be protected for posterity, enjoyed by future generations and remain faithful to the memory and intentions of the artist.
Topics for discussion will include how to design an appropriate estate structure, what financial considerations should be taken into account, loans and donations to museums and public institutions, collaboration with auction houses and galleries, authentication committees, conservation and maintenance of artistic works, archival organisation and catalogues raisonnés and the management of intellectual property issues.
